Former Australia wicket-keeper Julia Price has made history by becoming the first-ever female coach in the Big Bash League. She has joined Brisbane Heat and will assist the head coach Darren Lehmann, alongside fellow assistant James Hopes, bowling coach Ryan Harris, and coaching assistant Gavin Fitness for the upcoming Big Bash League season. “I’m pretty excited about [the role], I have to admit,” Price said while on commentary during the WBBL final. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to be around the guys and seeing how they do it differently to what the girls do.”
Price played 107 games for Queensland between 1993-94 and 2006-07 and a further 38 for Tasmania. She represented Australia in 94 international games between 1996 and 2005. She also played 10 Tests and 84 ODIs for Australia and was part of the 1997 and 2005 Women’s World Cup victories. She scored 479 runs and took catches 90 catches during her nine-year stint as Australia’s wicketkeeper.
“Having been in the Hurricanes set up for the WBBL, it will be interesting to see how the BBL does it. I had a bit to do with the Hurricanes boys but this will be a completely different level now … I can learn off both the players and the coaching staff,” Price added.
The 47-year-old has previously mentored her state team Tasmania in the Women’s National Cricket League and had coached Hobart Hurricanes for their first three seasons of the Women’s Big Bash League. Head coach Darren Lehmann said that her inclusion will be beneficial for the team. “We’d been chatting about whether there were some professional development opportunities for her through her USA role and we just went from there,” Lehmann said. “She has an excellent cricket brain and plenty of experience as a head coach, so I can see her fitting quite neatly into our set-up,” he added.
Brisbane Heat have lifted the title once in the 2012-13 season under James Hopes.
